Thank you Google!

Sweet!

I just got an email from Google, they screwed up and fixed some back end domain whois info and because of it I get a free year of registration on my domain name.

I never noticed any interruption and to be honest I probably would have never known or been any the wiser.

But hey, that's some decent customer service.

Thank you Google!

Classic movie: Colossus, The Forbin Project

Sharing the trailer for one of my favourite movies and favourite computer/tech movies.
Colossus, The Forbin Project.
An amazing, suspenseful movie about two computers and their artificial intelligence taking over the world.

Track this movie down and give it a watch, it's well worth it.
Great plot, lots of suspense and great "future tech" from the past.

Adam Savage - Overlook Hotel Maze

I found another mazing Adam Savage video to share, his building of the Overlook Hotel Maze from the movie The Shining for a travelling Stanley Kubrick collection.
Yet again he amazes with his crazy attention to detail and skills.
It's well worth the watch.

Slipn' N Slidn'

A video of me doing an amazing swan dive down our home made slip and slide.
From a few years ago for our buddy Jamie's going away to Japan party.

I'm pretty sure this thing needs to be rehashed this summer, bigger, longer and with more beer!

Adam Savage on Model Building

I came across this amazing video of Adam Savage from Myth Busters on model building where he takes you through the mould making process and then the build of a garage kit model.
Pretty amazing video for anyone who builds any sort of model as a hobby.
I haven't done a plastic kit in years, R/C these days, but I was still all over this.

To Mars they said.

A neat piece on the possibilities of travelling to Mars.
It also outlines some of the more 'stupid' parts of our society and the way it's phrased in relation to spending that money on space exploration or anything really, really puts in in perspective.

Definitely worth the read.

Excluding kernel updates

So, for anyone running a Linux system you will at some point update your system using one of the built in updater's such as yum or apt-get, or if you are using a desktop version, the built in updater or package manager. Doing this will eventually get you a kernel update and this is where things can go horribly wrong.
Case in point, I do all my development in a local virtual machine using virtualbox and doing a kernel update will most often horribly break things for me. The build in updater is a constant nag about kernel updates I don't want to do, so it's time to silence it.
The quick way around this, exclude any kernel updates.

This example will show you how to do with with yum. A little searching will find the same result for apt-get if that is your thing.

Using yum, from a terminal.
sudo vi /etc/yum.conf
Add this line to the end of the file
exclude=kernel*
Now save and quit
 :wq
From here on out whenever you run yum update you will exclude any kernel updates and if you are using a desktop, the built in updater won't nag you with those kernel updates. You can do them manually if you wish but as the old saying goes "If it ain't broke don't fix it", so if your system is running fine, leave it alone and you'll be happy in the end.

Plasma TV repair

I had received a 50" Dell plasma tv for free from my old job. It hung on the wall in tech support displaying department stats and one day it bit the dust. Just a single power light.
I was told I could take it if I wanted it and could fix it.
That was over two years ago.
Last night I finally got my lazy butt around to fixing it.

After checking out some forums and watching some video's on youtube I found the most common problems with it. Either a driver IC or bad capacitors. Being this one turned on but never got a picture at all I was banking on bad cap's.
After opening it up I could see 3 domed cap's on the power supply and set to taking the board out and de-soldering those cap's.

Here they are, the one got a little squished taking it out as it was held in place by some glue. No matter as they are going in the bin,

10 minutes later I had 3 new cap's taken out of an old blown PC power supply that I got for free for parts. I was lucky enough to find 3 exact replacements on the first power supply I grabbed. ( I was given a big of them ).

The moment of truth came, the board was installed back in, wires connected, ground screws in and power cord hooked up. Standing back to make sure I didn't get a face of exploding components, in case anything else was wrong with it, and I hit the power button and instantly had a picture.
Success!

We now have a fully working 50" plasma tv. All for free.
It only cost me about an hour's worth of time.

Now I only need to either find a stand for it, make one or get a wall mount.
